Requesting state help in Indiana

No Indiana statute names one agency to lead searches for lost or missing people. The state SAR plan says SAR is mainly the responsibility of the local jurisdiction and its on-scene incident commander (typically the local police, county sheriff or fire department).

  1. State contact (for agencies)IDHS State EOC Watch Desk (24/7) 1-800-669-7362 ext. 1 (watchdesk@dhs.in.gov) · IDHS main office (weekdays 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) (317) 232-2222.
  2. Requesting state resourcesIf more help is needed, the county emergency management agency or county EOC contacts the IDHS State EOC Watch Desk: 1-800-669-7362 ext. 1.

How search and rescue is requested in Indiana

  1. Step 1In an emergency call 911. The local law enforcement or fire agency with jurisdiction sets up incident command and leads the search.
  2. Step 2The incident commander uses local resources and mutual aid agreements first. For incidents on water, in caves or on DNR property, Indiana DNR Law Enforcement specialty teams can help.
  3. Step 3If more help is needed, the county emergency management agency or county EOC contacts the IDHS State EOC Watch Desk: 1-800-669-7362 ext. 1.
  4. Step 4The State EOC tasks state resources such as DNR teams, IDHS drone and K-9 teams, Indiana Task Force One, the Indiana National Guard, the State Police or Civil Air Patrol.
  5. Step 5The state ESF-9 annex lists Civil Air Patrol as a support organization for missing aircraft, hiker and boater searches; it is requested through the State EOC.

Law and authority

Counts are directory category listings, not unique organizations, personnel or available assets. Informational canine placeholders are excluded. Organizations can appear in several categories; canine specialty subtotals can overlap.

Aviation (ISP Aviation)

Indiana State Police aviation supports local agencies free of charge; Civil Air Patrol is available to counties through a state agreement.

How to request

In Indiana, the local law enforcement agency runs the search and requests canine teams, directly; when more help is needed, the county emergency management agency asks the IDHS State EOC, which can deploy IDHS and credentialed K-9 teams.

Standards and policy

Indiana does not require SAR dog credentials by law. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) runs a voluntary K-9 pretest and credentialing test by discipline. Its pages (marked effective August 2020) give no recertification cycle. Volunteer teams may also use NASAR for handlers or other bodies, so ask each team what it holds.
