Requesting state help in Missouri

No Missouri statute names a single lead agency for search and rescue. In practice the local law enforcement agency with jurisdiction (usually the county sheriff, or city police) leads land searches for missing persons, with fire protection districts often handling water and technical rescue.

How search and rescue is requested in Missouri

  1. Step 1In an emergency call 911. Agencies needing a lost-person search contact the sheriff's office (or local police) where the person was last seen; that agency leads the search.
  2. Step 2The lead agency uses its own deputies, local fire protection districts and volunteer SAR teams, then neighboring agencies through mutual aid.
  3. Step 3The Missouri State Highway Patrol can assist with aircraft, its Water Patrol Division and its Dive Team (on call 24/7). Request through *55 or 1-800-525-5555.
  4. Step 4For other state resources (National Guard, Department of Conservation), the county emergency management director or local EOC asks the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA, 573-526-9100).
  5. Step 5For a life-threatening search needing Civil Air Patrol or military aircraft, call the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (800-851-3051). Missouri Task Force 1, a FEMA urban search and rescue team maintained by the Boone County Fire Protection District in Columbia, handles structural collapse.
